Don’s first passion inherited from his Father was Football and he was in fact a very gifted young player. At the age of 14 he was released from Charlton Athletic Football Clubs School of Excellence and quickly found a new passion for Rap/Grime music as a way of expressing himself. From Mc’ing in School battles and amongst peers in the Lewisham/Greenwich Area Don quickly attracted an impressive local following, his buzz was soon replicated London-wide and by early 2010 Don had recorded his first F64 freestyle for SBTV. An instant classic, which racked up more than 800,000 views. Following on from this success, ‘Blue Magic,’ Don’s debut independent release, dropped in May 2010 and received a massive 50,000 downloads. ‘Blue Steel,’ the pre-album, was released in January 2011 and played a pivotal role in securing Don’s position as a talented and well respected figure on the underground music map. Flying into the iTunes Hip Hop Chart at No1, Continuing to make a name for himself, Don scooped the prize for ‘Best Newcomer 2010’ at the Official Mixtape Awards and was invited on to Charlie Sloth’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show for a coveted ‘Fire In The Booth’ freestyle. The video for this has over 700,000 views on Youtube.
Despite this underground success, the negative stigma surrounding the name ‘Don Strapzy’ meant that his shows were being shut down and music not supported by Radio stations. In an attempt to mature as an Artist and further his career Don agreed to accept the advice he had received from respected people within the industry and reluctantly created a New Alias ‘Dru Blu’ as his stage name. Under the name Dru Blu he began to receive more support from the ‘industry’ and gained an even broader following despite upsetting some of his core fanbase. After a free mixtape in early 2012, Dons first release as ‘Dru Blu’ was ironically and defiantly called, ‘This Is Don Strapzy. Like his previous releases this CD once again took the No1 spot in the iTunes Hip Hop Chart. To date, the CD has sold an impressive 7,000 physical copies independently and boasts over 300,000 video views.
Remaining fiercely loyal to his original name ‘Don Strapzy’, August 2013 saw the release of ‘Double or Nothing’ an acronym for the ‘DON’ in Don Strapzy. This Album again topped the iTunes Hip-Hop charts andIt’s first single, ‘Check,’ featuring the UK’s biggest dancehall artist Stylo G, was playlisted (A-list) on 1Xtra. In October 2013 Don Strapzy accepted the invitation of Hip-Hop DJ ‘Mr Play’ to travel to Atlanta (USA), where he performed and networked with some of Atlanta’s hottest DJ’s & Artist’s.
