“Vanessa White has been carefully crafting a solo career for herself and we’re really, really into it.” – i-D
The EP comes days after the release of ‘Running Wild’ which NYLON described as a ‘total banger’, crowning her as ‘the new queen of R&B’. With production from the dynamic London producer LongLivThePlug, the vibrant track mixes urgent hip-hop and future R&B beats with Vanessa’s sublimely soulful vocal and brilliantly showcases her sharp song-writing talent which has helped her to garner praise from music fans and outlets such as Wonderland, Complex, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Beats 1, 1Xtra and Capital Xtra and more since launching her solo career towards the end of 2015.
Already shooting to the top of iTunes’ Bestselling R&B pre-order chart and the top ten of the general Bestselling pre-order chart in the lead-up to its release, Vanessa continues to make her trailblazing assault on the music scene. Adding to ‘Running Wild’ and the Mkulu produced ‘Good Good’ – and stunning stripped-back versions of both tracks – the EP also features three brand new tracks. With production from Ads Valu on ‘Rotation’ and ‘Pressure’ and Chloe Martini on ‘Trust Me’, the previously unheard tracks see Vanessa building on the waves she has caused and taking things to the next level with her show-stopping vocal prowess and own unique take on addictive R&B melodies.
To mark the release of the EP, Vanessa was shot exclusively for the legendary fashion photographer Rankin’s Hunger magazine. The shoot sees Vanessa transformed as she explores different personas in a series of high fashion set-ups from Asian influenced silks [insert designer], to a confident streetwear look [insert designer] and even a dramatic change of hair colour. She also speaks frankly about the newfound honesty in her music, being a woman in an often male-dominated industry and taking full control of her solo journey.
Over the past year, Vanessa has been putting in the hours in the studio working with a host of talented and in-demand producers and musicians including the likes of PRGRSN, Wizzy Wow, Shakka, Musicman Ty (Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, P Diddy) and Snakehips and has also been collaborating with innovative creatives such as Rob Heppell (Crystal Fighters, New Pharaohs, Nowness), Charlotte Rutherford (PAPER, NYLON, Vogue) and Stephanie Sian Smith (FKA Twigs, Blood Orange, House of Holland).
Having been raised listening to Chaka Khan, Level 42 and Stevie Wonder, Ruby Francis’ passion for music can be traced back to her childhood. She received her first keyboard aged 10 and from that day on began writing her own material. She is inspired by artists’ music from both the analog and digital ages, merging futuristic R&B and a little bit of an 80s sound with heavy soul and a dash of funky jazz.
Having already collaborated with producers Dornik, Linden Jay, Miles James (produced for NAO), Chloe Martini and Shift K3y she was picked up by manager Kwame Kwaten of Ferocious Talent (Laura Mvula, The Age of L.U.N.A, Jodie Abacus, Sarah Walk). Ruby is working on new material for her debut EP which will be released in May 2017
Her debut single Fall Asleep, written and produced by Ruby and NK-OK from Blue Lab Beats, was released in March 2017. It was immediately added to many playlists on Spotify including New Music Friday and Fresh Finds, shooting to the top 25 of the UK Spotify Viral 50. The track has been supported by both DJ Target and DJ ACE at BBC 1xtra and has also picked up a BBC Introducing in London play. The video for the single was premiered by Wonderland who said the single was a “dreamy love song wrapped up in an infectious B&B package”.
